Protect Main Street Business, Not Wall Street Gambling
CONTACT: Bob Keener, 617-610-6766, bobkeener@businessforsharedprosperity.org
May 14, 2010 -- With financial reform on the line in the Senate, and a new report from the TARP Congressional Oversight Panel showing shrinking lending to small businesses by large banks, business owners from Maine to Oregon, Louisiana to Indiana, are calling on Senators to protect Main Street business, not Wall Street gambling. “Politicians love to point out that most new jobs are created by small businesses. Senators should listen to the business owners who know the difference between gambling and investment, didn’t wreck the economy, and want real reform to prevent a repeat,” said small business owner Lew Prince, Managing Partner of Vintage Vinyl in St. Louis.
“The U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce stands squarely behind the needs of America’s job-creating Main Street small businesses in asking Congress to represent our interests by bringing strong transparency, oversight and accountability to Wall Street,” said CEO Margot Dorfman.
Consumer financial protection is one of the hottest areas of disagreement in financial reform. Contrary to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s multimillion-dollar campaign opposing the CFPA, hundreds of business organizations and owners – from auto dealers and medical practices to construction companies and restaurants – signed Business for Shared Prosperity’s Statement in support of a strong, independent Consumer Financial Protection Agency. Organizational signers include the U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Small Business Chamber of Commerce, American Made Alliance, Main Street Alliance, American Business Leaders for Financial Reform, Oregon Small Business Council, Richmond, VA Metropolitan Business League, Atlanta Women in Business, Illinois Main Street Alliance, Maine Small Business Coalition, Washington Small Business for Secure Health Care Coalition, Virginia Main Street Alliance and Businesses for a Healthy Montana.
